Can Secular Home Schooling Guide Our Children Well?

by Eddy Ledger

As more and more parents from all walks of life are opting to home schooling, there are reasons that varies vastly, so a generalization cannot be made. Around the world, there are over 5% of children that are into home schooling and the numbers are increasing.

Secular Home Schooling

It is based on the education according to the child's interests on learning. Such practices are supported by local communities that have strong faith in religion. These communities just want to live a closer bond with their children and their values in order to teach them the right beliefs.

How to get the benefits of secular home schooling?

* It encourages the child to create a strong bond with them as they grow up.

* It allows the child the choice to express his or her desires and aptitude for learning what he or she has the most interest in that area.

* Their traditional values and beliefs stay intact.

* Safety and educational control.

Getting to know the disadvantages of secular home schooling.

* Once you let the child do whatever he/she chooses, they may end up in nothing. If the children don't particularly enjoy studying, he might not able to survive in today's world without much knowledge by his side.

* As they are not able to deal with the outside world, their growth will be limited within the society.

* The child does not always get his/her own way in day-to-day life; a concept lost on a child who was left to do what he or she wanted since childhood.

* Children that attended secular home schooling education is like not having any read education. It is tough for them to find a proper job in the real world, even though they might have a diploma or college degree.

With more disadvantages than benefits attending a secular home schooling program, in which the child will see them sooner or later. However, there are still many embarking on this kind of education due to their beliefs, values, and the social communities they live in.

Secular home schooling is often found in rural areas, and in not highly educated families with strong religious background. Having mentioned that there are more disadvantages than benefits, these parents still embark on this education thinking that they are giving them the very best in their lives by not exposing them to the outside world.

We should never miss out on the education that allows us to get in touch with nature. This enables us to fully understand the true value of life.

All About Remote Control Helicopters

by George Thomas

Ever since being a little kid I was interested in remote control vehicles and toys. One vehicle I always wanted was a remote control helicopter. Helicopters are truly amazing aircrafts. They can fly like an airplane plus they can do many things an airplane could only dream of, like hover. Helicopter can fly forward, backward, side to side, hover, straight up and down, and even rotate completely on their vertical axles.

When you think about all the different directions and abilities a helicopter has why would you not want one? Especially a remote controlled helicopter. Well as I found helicopters are one of the most complicated and difficult aircrafts to learn to fly. So are their remote control counter-parts. The other down side of remote control helicopters is their price. They are very complex and technological advanced aircrafts. As a result they are very expensive.

Remote control helicopters have came a long way in the last 20 years and have gotten easier to fly and easier on the wallet as well. Remote control technology in general has really improved over the years and it continues to get more affordable. There are a lot of different options for remote control helicopter now and some of them are even beginner friendly.

Micro helicopters are small usually 2-channel remote control helicopters. These are toys which everyone and every skill level can enjoy. They are not capable of all the functions of a real helicopter but they are inexpensive and very easy to fly. They are great for beginners.

A step above micro remote control helicopters are coaxial helicopters. Coaxial helicopters have two main rotors which spin in opposite directions. This eliminates the need for a tail rotor. These remote control helicopters are usually either 3 or 4 channels and are capable of all the functions of a real helicopter except 3D flight and inverted flight. The main advantage of coaxial remote control helicopter is they are more stable than helicopter with tail rotors and they are easier to fly. These are not toys so do take them seriously. They will take time to learn and can break if crashed. You can get complete ready to fly kits for less than $200.

Next up are 4-channel fixed pitch remote control helicopters. These are a step above coaxial helicopters. Real helicopters have what is called collective pitch. These means the main rotor blade pitch can change. This allows the helicopter to go up and down very quickly. Well with a fixed pitch helicopter the pitch of the main rotor is fixed hints the name. The helicopter goes up and down by how fast or slow the rotor blades spin. Fixed pitch helicopters are a bit easier to than collective pitch helicopters because you have one less control to worry about when flying.

Next up are full blown remote control helicopters. These have up to 6 channels of controls and can be very difficult and expense to learn to fly and maintain. But do not let that discourage you. It is very rewarding learning to fly a 6-channel remote control helicopter. It will take time, patient and money but the results are definitely worth it. They can fly completely inverted and do some amazing 3D maneuvers. They can even do things a real life helicopter could only dream of.

Is Homeschooling Something YOU Could Do?

by Phyllis Wheeler

I am guessing you aren't happy with the schooling your kids are getting, for whatever reason. You've suggested homeschooling to yourself. But you can't imagine yourself doing it because you aren't superwoman, able to juggle lessons and other mom duties.

Take it from a homeschooling veteran, you can do it IF you love your kids. That's the only qualification. As you move through the homeschooling journey, you will develop the skills you need, as you need them. That's how jugglers start--juggling just one thing. Then they add another, and after a while another.

And here's another secret: homeschooling can actually be easier than the standard soccer mom routine. Soccer moms are everywhere but home, juggling same-age activities that are different for each kid (unless you have twins). In contrast, when you homeschool, you focus on what you can all do together.

In addition, kids in school often have plenty of homework and need help from you in the evening. If you homeschool, you get all that out of the way in the morning, and your evenings are free.

Large families often enjoy doing unit studies. These are large topics, for instance ancient Egypt, which can be treated differently for various ages.Your read-aloud could be a book called Mara, Daughter of the Nile. A young child might write sentences about it; an older child might create a paper. They all might work on an art project, such as a scroll with hieroglyphics. Math can be worked in too--figuring the height of a pyramid using similar triangles. The unit could be capped with a visit to the art museum. Such unit studies might last a month, and are commonly available for purchase.

You can expect to use workbooks and curriculum made for homeschoolers, to make sure your child learns what he should for his age and grade. Typically these curriculums include an answer key--you don't need to be the expert. In fact, homeschoolers become adept at learning from the book, rather than from a teacher. Their reading skills are well prepared for college.

Correspondence schools will teach your child, too. These can take the form of videos, workbooks, or online.

How do you structure your day? Many families do the tougher studying in the morning, leaving the afternoon for projects or play. There are plenty of organizations these days with daytime classes for homeschoolers, if you want to sign up for something outside the home. You could even send your kids to organized sports with schooled kids in the late afternoon, if you are willing to do some driving! Watch out how much of that you sign up for though! You have to be careful to avoid burnout.

How about socializing? Staying home all the time may be easier for you, but it may not make your kids happy. You may decide they need to get out and about for socialization. But here's the best part: you get to choose whom your child socializes with. You don't have to worry about bullies. You can make sure that socialization is well-supervised. You can choose adults, too. Homeschooled kids are usually very comfortable talking to adults, unlike schooled kids, I have observed.

A homeschool co-op is one of the best solutions to the need for socialization. If you meet once a week with other homeschoolers for class or field trips, your child gets well-supervised social interaction, and can learn and grow socially in a way that a schooled child cannot. Bullying is simply not a problem for homeschoolers! So how do you find a co-op? You have to ask other homeschoolers. If your area has a homeschooling convention, by all means go to it, and go to workshops if they have any. You need to network with other homeschoolers until you find or can create a co-op.

You will need support as well. Homeschooling provides unique challenges, and it helps so much to have others to talk to who are doing it too. You can find plenty of homeschool moms online, in discussion forums and email groups. You should try several!

The answer to the homeschooling question is simple: yes, you can do it.

Educational Software For Kids

by Fabian Toulouse

The pressure on today's youngsters to succeed in school is phenomenal. Not only is the pressure on youngsters, but it is on teachers and administrators as well. Sometimes, the in-school environment can suffer from tension and pressure that makes the learning experience painful. Gone are the days of long recesses on inviting days and long lunch hours with time to chat with friends. Kids are moved speedily from one activity or subject to another, trying to shovel into the students' heads enough information to see them through the vital year end tests.

For some children, the pressure manifests itself in stress-related illness and bad school performance. For those students, it may be time to let the games begin! Educational software for kids makes learning engaging instead of a like a cattle drive. Learning games can help a child who is left behind by the quicker pace of his classmates catch up.

Children who are bored with a certain class, like math or reading, can find it a lot more fun when it is offered to them in the form of a game. Kids who detest doing homework and refuse to put in the time necessary to memorize such basics as the multiplication tables or addition facts may have to be cajoled away from math games teaching the same skills.

Teachers and parents alike can profit from educational software. Using video games is an easy way to capitalize on something today's children naturally love. The game format is familiar; they get excited about the challenge of trying to beat level after level. And with educational games, the more levels they tackle, the more they learn! There are games for several of the classes for which they are responsible in school, as well as games that focus on a particular areas of interest a child might have.

Learning should not be painful to a child. In fact, a lifelong love of learning is one of the most valuable gifts you could ever give your child. Foster that curiosity and watch your child succeed.
