Tips for Making Delicious Stew Recipes

When the weather is cold and your family is craving something thick and warming, how about making a delicious stew? A stew is a mixture of solid foods such as meat or fish and vegetables, which have been cooked slowly or simmered in liquid to combine the flavors well. The liquid is served as well as the chunky bits.

Popular ingredients to use in stew recipes include chicken, seafood, meat, potatoes, fish, beans, fruit, and carrots. You can use bouillon, water, beer, or wine in the stew liquid and seasonings give the dish more flavor.

Is Stew the Same as Soup?

Stewing is often used for cheap, tough meat cuts because stewing is the only way to make them tender. A stew has larger pieces of meat, fish, or vegetables than a soup and there is more of those and less liquid than you would get in a soup.

Stew is served as a main dish rather than as an appetizer and always contains chunky ingredients. Soup can be served as pureed liquid only without any bits in and is always served in a bowl or deep dish. A chunky stew can be served on a plate.

How to Make Stew More Interesting

There is a limit to how flavorful a combination of meat, vegetables and water can be, which is why it is useful to know how to make your stew recipes flavorful.

Stew is a very versatile dish and can work well with many different combinations of meat, vegetables, liquids, herbs, and spices. It is a good idea to season your stew meat with plenty of salt and pepper before searing them in a hot pan.

You might want to roll the meat in flour to thicken up the stew. Meat chunks should be browned all over before you add them to the liquid. This means they will not dry out. This applies whichever type of meat you are using - chicken, beef, pork, or something else.

The next thing to do is saut your vegetables before adding wine, water, broth, juice, or another liquid. You need to scrape the bottom of the pan to get any stuck on bits off and mix them into the liquid. This adds lots of flavor. Put the meat back into the pan with the vegetables and liquid and cook it slowly until the flavors are well combined and everything is tender.

You should check the stew now and then to see if it needs more liquid, more seasoning, or a stir. When it is cooked, you can add some parsley, crumbled bacon, cider, or lemon juice to liven up the flavor. You can serve it with some warm bread on the side for mopping up the tasty juices.

It is fun to make stew and extremely simple too. Whether you want to make a traditional Irish stew or a Moroccan chicken stew, as long as you follow the above tips your stew should be very nice.

The Goblet System of Growing Grapes

There are those who have tried out the Labruscan varieties from Ontario. These cannot be grown under Guyot pruning methods but must be cultivated by a simpler system such as one main rod plus six strong side growths, which are pruned back hard each January.

They could also be grown on the 'Grow as you like' system, being allowed to scramble over a trellis or cover a fence or wall. Under this system very little pruning is necessary, though it does pay to cut back the fruiting laterals in the summer at two leaves above a bunch.

The leaves of the vines grown against walls are often attacked by Red Spiders, and the answer here is to syringe the under surface of the foliage in the evening, twice a week, from the beginning of June onwards. In cases of bad attack some liquid derris should be added to the water.

Once in position the rod is cut back, by about a quarter, and then the shoot which develops from the end bud is tied along the bottom wire until it reaches the next cordon where it is pruned, in the summer, to just above a bud. The laterals or side growths that develop from the lower parts of the cane are tied to the top wire when they are long enough and they are then pruned.

Powdery Mildew causes white patches to appear on the leaves and then the fruit, then the young shoots. Individual grapes that are attacked will either fall or go rotten. Vines that are mulched are seldom attacked with mildew, and when the young laterals are properly spaced out, so that they are not overcrowded, this disease seldom appears. Dusting the plants with a fine sulphur dust largely cures the trouble when seen.

When growing a vine against a wall the pruning may be similar. The rod instead of being taken along a lower wire can be trained, with a main rod growing upwards and with side permanent rods trained out at right angles. Thus a series of horizontal cordons are formed and the laterals they produce are pruned back hard each January. These are tied to wires stretched tightly in between the main wires.

Survival in the NICU

On August 1st, our lives changed quite dramatically. I set foot into a place that I didn't even know exist, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. My son, had been born premature ten weeks earlier than his due date. Reflecting on this scary and eventful experience, I would like to share the things I learned, in order to help any who might be taking their first steps into the NICU.

First worrisome part of the environment surrounding the NICU for me was the constant dinging of bells and alarms that go off. I was sure that my son was in cardiac arrest, or had stopped breathing. Only this was not the case.

The nurses use all these sounds to simply understand what is going on with all the different babies they are caring for at the time. The dings mean merely that the oxygen is slightly lower than they want it, or the IV fluid needs refilled. When the alarms are sounding for something that is serious, you will know by their sound of urgency and the quick response by several nurses to your baby's aid.

I was also worried about the nurses going from baby to baby with so many of them suffering from contagious infections. I soon learned that every person in the NICU, including visitors, must take precious care to stay sanitary by washing their hands very frequently. They also hospital grade hand sanitizer very accessible all over the NICU.

Since the nurses do have so many babies to watch, they can't always come talk to you as soon as you need them too. To help with this, it's good to let them know what times of day is best for you to come and then they can expect you. You may not always have the same nurses everyday, but they spend an hour passing information to each other at the changing of shifts, so that all the nurses will know when you are to come.

Also, when they know when you are coming they can arrange for other people to come and help you with all that is available there. For example, you can set up with a lactation specialist to help you get breast milk for your baby. This is most useful since it has been proven that when babies are fed breast milk in the NICU they will go home much faster.

Many specialists are available to help you learn all the unique tools you will need to care for your special baby. NICU babies do need special care and attention. These NICU workers are so interested in helping you that they get to know your situation personally and remember what skills you have learned and what you have yet to learn.

Kangaroo Care is offered to help the parent and baby bond together, along with helping the baby learn by the guidance of the parent's body how to keep a consistent body temperature and heart rate. I also was trained in the techniques of baby massage, for calming and soothing the baby. First Aid was perhaps the most useful of all these training experiences.

I am hoping that your NICU experience will be much more than anxiety. You and your spouse can come away with a very useful learning experience if all these elements of the NICU are utilized to the fullest. These classes and services not only help time go faster by giving you something to look forward too, but it also helps you feel more prepared for the homecoming. It will allow you to feel all the important feelings of joy and excitement when your child finally comes into the safety of your home.

Should I let my child play Dress up Games?

As any parent of a child knows, children are substituting traditional dolls with their small clothing for computer generated virtual dolls. It's only natural; just think for a moment that for them, computers, laptops, internet, control remotes, and USBs have always existed. Plastic and fabric are materials that "we", the grown ups used to play with in the Stone Age. If you have spent time with your child while he or she uses the computer, you will be able to see that these virtual dolls are found very easily on several websites. And yes, they can be dressed as the player wishes, and most of all, they're free. You can forget about buying a new doll just because it has a hat that's a different color from the one your little girl's doll already has. That's not bad news for your wallet, is it?

Are these virtual dolls difficult to use? Not at all, all you need is a computer and a decent internet connection. And, if you have children of any age, I'm sure you have those already. Most of all, forget about taking care of the plastic dolls, the little clothes, the little shoes and hats and accessories. There won't be any dolls on the floor to pick up after playing and no need to toss away a $25 doll because the dog decided to play with it too.

If you are a responsible father, you must be wondering if these virtual dolls are proper and adequate for your kid. They actually are. Just like you did with color blocks and color crayons when you were a small child, your child will be playing and experimenting with colors, patterns, and forms. Your kid will also be flexing her imagination, style and fashion sense. It can actually be a fun, and artistic leisure time. As with any computer, video game or TV show, you should supervise your child's playtime, but this will give you the opportunity to interact with her and encourage her creativity, as well as to build up her self esteem. He or she might even tell you they would like to be a stylist, fashion designer, or even a computer programmer so that they can design his or her own virtual dolls, clothes or accessories.

Some people think that these dress-up games are frivolous and superfluous, with all the pretty clothing, fashion and style tone to them. This is not true. They are just being the virtual age equivalent of Barbie and other similar dolls, which you or your sisters or cousins used to play with when you were children. Besides, clothing and grooming are high aesthetic values in society, specially for women.

On the other hand, would you prefer a game that's about killing and shooting, full of blood and gore? There's enough violence on movies and TV as it is, and no need to further expose your child. At least dress-up games are creative, imaginative and aesthetic. You will also prefer to have your child sitting in the next room with the computer rather than exposing him or her to dangers on the street.

What is the History of GI Joe Snake Eyes the Mute?

You have found this article because you are a GI Joe addict just like me. And any GI Joe addict will absolutely remember Snake Eyes the GI Joe mute.

This action figure was my favorite. Snake eyes was very cool although he was mute. However, he was a well-trained ninja trained by none other than the Hard and Soft Master. Ass odd as these two masters' names are, they were the real deal.

When I was a youngster, I didn't care about the history of an action figure, I just wanted to own it. I can remember heading to the toy store and filling with anticipation about all of the GI Joes that I was going to have to choose from. Why could I have only one?

However, like every kid, I would grow a bit familiar with my new action figure and would be looking for ways to make it new again and gain more joy and excitement from it. Well, there was nothing better than sitting down with Snake Eyes posed in front of me and reading about his history on the profile card; which I carefully clipped out and saved.

How many combat veterans would live to tell the story of Vietnam, especially a story as exciting as the story of Snake Eyes and how he tragically became a mute. This guy was the real deal and his profile and story filled me with the desire to learn much more.

I would later grow fond of the GI Joe comic line and the awesome work of Larry Hama. His stories were and are still amazing and I soaked up every word about Snake Eyes and how he became a mute.

I am a grown man now and have experienced combat in the military myself. The Snake Eyes history and story is everything I wanted to be when I was a kid and I can now absolutely relate, however, in not such a heroic fashion. However, I am addicted to collecting these awesome toys and cannot commend them enough.

Profit From Brother Sewing Machine Repair

Where is the best place to get a sewing machine by Brother?

There are two basic series of sewing machines made by Brother International. The low end models are sold through many mass merchants and over the internet under the Brother brand. Higher quality Brother machines are sold through local independent sewing machine dealers who are authorized to provide unrivaled service, support, and instruction. Better quality machines are sold under the Pacesetter label.

What do I have to do to get my Brother sewing machine fixed?

Obviously, Walmart does not provide any services when they sell you a sewing machine. So, you have to seek instruction, support, and repair services elsewhere. You have two choices. You can ship your machine to one of the regional or national repair centers indicated in your user manual. Or, you can check your local yellow pages for your local authorized Brother dealer where you have a full service center to meet your sewing needs.

One of the most popular brands of sewing machines today is Brother. There are literally millions of machines sold every year. Whether you are interested in low end models or the best of the best; you can depend on Brother. If you will support your local independent dealer, you will be thrilled with the unrivaled level of support you receive.

While a sewing machine should be professionally service annually, the user can keep their sewing machine running smoothly in between. Use only quality threads. Frequently clean out the bobbin area and drop one drop of oil on the race. Frequently replace the needle.

What is involved in learning to do my own Brother repairs? Brother is one of the first machines I learned to repair, and frankly they are among the easiest to learn. While you apply to become a dealer, you can also learn Brother repair through sewing machine repair courses at home.

In 1993, when I was first starting my sewing machine repair, I felt a need to attain certification from somewhere. To my delight, Brother International had a program to certify Brother Sewing Machine Technicians. I applied and completed their requirements. The company issued my certification and sent me a window sign to display Certified Brother Sewing Machine Repairs.

As a certified repair center, Brother paid me directly for any warranty work I did. If the sewing machine was out of warranty, Brother owners brought it to me and paid me for my services. Everybody won. As a fringe benefit, I was able to order wholesale Brother repair parts.

When we opened our first sewing machine store, I continued doing Brother Sewing Machine Repairs, but added the Brother Pacesetter line as our primary sewing machine line. We were very excited to have such fine line of sewing machines to sell. Our sewing machine repair business continued to grow, and we were very happy to be the official Brother Sewing Machine Repair Center. We also serviced all the other sewing machine lines.

When I service a sewing machine, I use a reference sheet with over fifty items to check off. However, the basics are pretty simple. Test to diagnose. Remove covers. Clean inside and out. Lubricate. Repair and adjust. Reassemble. Do a complete final test sew.

You can be proud of Brother. Keep your sewing machine operating in top condition. Learn to do your own repairs or open your own business. In every case, rest assured Brother is a brand you can depend on.

Take Your Next Family Vacation at a Ski Resort

If your family loves to ski, you should try a winter holiday instead of just a day or weekend here and there. There are some great locations for a family vacation of skiing.

Maine has one of the best and most beautiful ski centers at Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf Mountain became a ski destination back in 1951 when "The Bigelow Boys" cut a ski trail. Sugarloaf Mountain is the second highest mountain in the state of Maine, second only to Mount Katahdin, the highest.

Cannon Mountain, in New Hampshire, in addition to great skiing also is home to the New England Ski Museum. Here anyone interested in the sport can view old ski equipment and clothes, and see movies, photos and art all connected with skiing. This collection is recognized as one of the best sources for information on the sport of skiing, and the United States Ski Association cites it as only one of four museums in the country devoted to the interest of the skiing community.

Ontario, Canada has a beautiful and large ski resort on the south side of Georgian Bay called Blue Mountain. This ski center boasts a number of six man chair lifts and a lovely pedestrian village. This is a pretty spot for both skiing and lounging.

Whiteface Mountain in New York State is a premier ski range, once home of the winter Olympics. It is the fifth highest mountain in the state, and one of the highest peaks of the Adirondack mountain range. At the top of Whiteface, one has a complete panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and when the weather is clear, you can see Vermont and all the way to Canada. Located near the charming town of Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain ski area boasts the greatest vertical drop in the eastern United States.

Colorado is famous for skiing, and Aspen is synonymous with the sport. The locals call this town by its former name of Ajax, but by any name, it is a skier's dream. Alongside its famous sister resort, Vail, it draws many visitors to great vacations each year.

Park City Utah is another western gem that is popular. This resort was the location of the 2002 winter Olympics, and so is a world class ski center.

The origin of skiing comes from snow shoeing, which was a necessity to get around in certain regions of the world. Sondre Norheim is considered the father of skiing. This Norwegian invented slolam skiing in the 1800s, today known as Telemark skiing. Skiing had purely practical roots as a transportation method, but today it is mostly considered a sport and people are attracted to the thrill of a fast downhill run in warm clothes on a cleared and patrolled slope, rather than using it to get from place to place. Even cross country skiers tend to stick to the resort area for safety, and many European cities, where the sport is most popular, ban cross country skiing outside of resort areas.

Many people love the freedom of flying down the slopes but it is important to take lessons and gain some basic skills to avoid injury. Most ski resorts have schools and instructors ready to get snow bunnies up and off on their skis.

If you are in relatively good shape, skiing is not a difficult sport to learn; it just requires some balance and strength. After a day of vigourous skiing, there is nothing like relaxing in the lodge with a cup of hot cocoa by the blazing fire, so if you want to try a great vacation that's a little different, try one of these resorts.
