The American Baby Shower – A Family Tradition Continues On

The American baby shower is a celebration in which a new-coming child is welcomed into the world by family and friends, and is traditionally "showered" with baby gifts. Baby showers have become increasingly popular in the United States, and the custom of hosting a baby shower is a wonderful way of helping expectant parents get essential items for the infant, such as baby bedding, strollers, clothes, and diapers. In America, baby showers are generally held about one to two months before the baby's arrival. By having the baby shower a while before the baby is born, parents can be better prepared and have all the necessary articles, furniture, and appliances that a new baby will call for.

Although historians are not completely clear on exactly when the baby shower custom began in the world, there is evidence that shows the previous existence of what we would call today, a baby shower, in several ancient cultures. During the Roman, Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese eras, for example, newborn babies and their mothers were presented with a variety of hand-made gifts by family and friends, during beautiful feasts for the little girl that would celebrate their life. Historians believe that the American baby shower draws its origins from these ancient cultural traditions.

Baby showers did not become popular in North America until the baby boom era after World War II. They were actually held when the baby was presented after birth, and coincided with christenings and baptisms in the case of a religious family. These first baby showers were considered a women's event, and by no means allow men as guests. The original post-birth American baby showers also served the purpose of giving the new mother and baby some company while they were at home for the first month of the infant's life.

Today, the modern baby shower is usually held one to two months before the baby's due date, not after the newborn's birth, like it was originally held. There has also been a recent trend in which families are breaking social paradigms and constraints, and therefore, co-ed baby showers are becoming increasingly popular. It is now common that friends and relatives of both the mommy-to-be and the daddy-to-be are invited to celebrate the coming of a new member of the family, regardless of their gender.

The gift-giving process has definitely evolved since ancient times when guests would bring handmade gifts to "shower" the baby. In modern society, the expectant parents usually register with a department store or a baby specialty store in order to create a wish list. Friends and relatives would then go to the store that the parents are registered in, look them up in the registries by name, and print out the wish list. This is a great way for guests to know what the parents need or desire as gifts the new baby boy.

The modern American baby shower is a wonderful way of welcoming a new baby into this world. Baby showers are enjoyable and fun for both parents and guests, and they are the perfect occasion to celebrate life and help parents prepare for the new coming baby.

Nursing Bras Information

If you're planning on breastfeeding your baby, you'll need to think about buying some nursing bras. Breastfeeding a baby, especially outside of the home, can be tough at times, so it's worth spending a little time and thought before you buy the nursing bra that is right for you.

Making certain a nursing bra fits correctly is important. You should not buy your bra too early in your pregnancy as your breasts will be nearing their full size prior to breastfeeding your baby, buy during the last months instead. The best people to consult about the perfect bra for nursing are the experts.

A bra that doesn't fit correctly can block your milk ducts and cause decreased milk production. Also, plugged milk ducts can become infected that can lead to mastitis. All women are different and therefore, what might be a good nursing bra for some, may not be the right nursing bra for others.

One of the more popular types of nursing bras are those that have under wires. Under wires provide extra support, especially to those who have bigger bust lines. However, these bras, particularly if they are too small or tight, can dig into your breast tissue and clog a milk duct, which can lead to mastitis. If you do opt for an under wire bra, make certain that the bra fits properly and that the wire is not pressing on any part of your breast.

There are some nursing bras that are equipped with flaps that simply open to reveal the breast when it's time to breastfeed. The flaps on nursing bras differ; some hook or fasten at the top while others close in the middle of the chest. If you choose this style, make sure the flap opens easily and exposes enough of the breast to make it simple for the baby to feed.

There are also nursing bras without under wires and flaps, which are designed to be lifted above the breasts, or pushed to one side. Typically, these bras are made of softer fabrics that make them a comfortable option as well as easy to use.

Purchase as many bras as you can afford, you don't necessarily need one for each day of the week but remember that you will be producing a lot of milk and will suffer from leaky breasts, so you will need to wash your nursing bras frequently. The main things to look out for are: cotton bras, as they will help keep your nipple cool and dry; and good, wide straps that are going to give you lots of support.

Don't be fooled into thinking that nursing bras have to be unflattering. There are various styles and colors to choose from, and they are every bit as sexy as the bras you wore before you were pregnant. There is no such thing as the best nursing bra. Buy the one that gives you the best support, is easy for you to use and gives you the greatest confidence. The Internet is a great place to find the maternity clothing that is right for you.

How To Improve Your Finished Basement Design

The basement is a part of your house that can be used in so many ways. If given some thought, you can remodel it into something worth your time and money. Nowadays, a finished basement design has become a very popular investment. How to improve it is easy, manageable and relatively affordable too. In fact, with a little creativity and knowledge in art or interior design, you can turn your basement into the most beautiful and favorite hangout place in your home.

Don't be discouraged. Here are some of the things you can make out of your unattended basement.

- Office Space in Your Home. Supposing you have a small business run at home and you need an office. The basement can be the perfect place to set this plan up. Assuming that you have a finished basement design already. All you need to do is furnish it. Add office furniture and all other office supplies, equipment, and useful stuff like lamps, book shelf, etc. Don't forget to install a phone and a fax machine.

- Small gym - A treadmill doesn't require a huge space. So does any set of weights. You can always put it in a corner in your basement. A good place would be near the window if you like to work out with the cool breeze of fresh air. That way you'll also have the feel of a semi-outdoor while doing your regular exercise.

- Children's Playroom - There are really no furnishings needed on this one. Although you might need a removable rubber carpet on the floor to go with your finished basement design. Kids can be messy and unpredictable. Accidents can happen. A rubber mat should keep them comfortable in their place. And for extra safety precaution, consider setting up a railing around them.

- Home Entertainment Room - Take advantage of the lack of lighting and convert it into a new facility. Some homes use the dark corners in their basement as a mini theatre. Others would use it as a dark room. Not only is your finished basement design space optimized, it has brought a new experience too.

- Personal Basement Bar - Converting your finished basement design into a bar is a cool idea too. That would take away your problems in where you want to hold mini parties with your friends on weekends. But remember to have proper ventilation or a room temperature balance because it can get warm and sweaty when it's crowded.

- A Guest Room - If you have a big family and have used up all the rooms for your kids, why not use the basement as another bedroom. You can have your guests use it. You in-laws perhaps if they come over to visit the kids.

- Your Own Music Studio - Your finished basement design is probably the most well insulated place in your house in terms of acoustics. If you have a teenager who loves to play in a band, you might want to explore this option. A music studio can be cheaper and only needs good sound insulation.

These are just some things you can do with a basement. If your basement is spacious, you can accommodate all of the above mentioned. It's really up to you. A very good finished basement design should be flexible in terms of use. Just make sure it's still cozy and can make your friends or guests feel welcome. This little den in your home can go a long way.

The Benefits of On Location Photography

Photographs are great to have for capturing memories and holding them for future viewing and reminiscing. Family photos are among the most treasured of all as they are of the entire family together. Sometimes, especially for families with very young children, getting ready for this event can be quite an ordeal. In this case, on site photography would be ideal. Consider the following scenario:

A young family is planning to have professional family photos made. They thought it would be nice to have a large family portrait to hang up, along with a nice package of photos to share with friends and relatives. So, they make an appointment with a local portrait studio on a day when there will be plenty of time to get 3 small children ready for the event.

Not as easy as it sounds. The hustle and bustle of scrambling to get everyone fed, dressed and looking good has Mom about to lose her mind and the baby, sensing al the tension, is in a bad mood. He keeps spitting up; better pack an extra outfit, just in case. Heading out to the car, the 2-1/2 year old manages to trip over her own feet and get a grass stain on her dress. The oldest child seems to be calmly waiting by the car for everyone; that's good. Or is it? They car is so dirty and he's leaning on it! His clothes are dirty too now. Dad cheerfully says "Maybe the photographer can pose us in such a way that the dirt is hidden.

When everyone is settled into the car, they realize it has already been an exhausting ordeal! Then the young family shows up for their appointment; now everyone needs to get out of their coats, fix their hair, straighten their clothing and get into position. Of course, the baby must have his clothes changed; he's also been crying, so his face is red and blotchy.

See the picture? This beautiful, happy family, with their nerves wearing thin, is about to have professional photographs taken. What they thought would be such a great idea has turned into a nightmare. It sure would have been nice to just get everyone ready, once, and then have the photographer show up at their home to take the photos. No one would be stressed out, trying to get ready and get to the studio; therefore, the baby would have a much happier morning as well. Everyone would be more relaxed and the children won't have had the chance to get dirty on the way to the car.

The on location photographer can create natural looking family photos with your home as the background. Or, if you would prefer not to show your home in the photos, the photographer will supply special background material so that your photos are like those taken in a studio.

On location photography is the best for recording weddings and special events like graduations, family reunions, parties and more. You just can't beat the convenience of on-site photography, where the photographer comes to you, fully equipped with a traveling photo studio. It is so much easier for families with young children to have family photos taken right in their home; this way, they can easily include their pets too.

Credit Cards Can Save You From Emergency

It is interesting to note how fast things change in today's world. Credit cards, for example, used to be a privilege to have, but they have almost become a necessity in today's world. In fact, a lot of people carry not just one but many different credit cards. Why do many people find them so necessary?

First is the convenience factor. Credit cards can be much more convenient when compared with cash, because you don't need to carry cash with you in order to make a purchase, just one piece of plastic. Credit cards are now accepted almost anywhere, and unlike cash, they can be used for online shopping.

The second benefit of credit cards is emergency help. If you run into a financial problem or an emergency situation and need immediate money, your credit card is easily accessible for help. Especially when compared to the alternative of waiting for your paycheck, credit cards come in very handy in an emergency.

Not only can credit cards save you in emergencies, but they also offer many options in everyday life. For example, shopping is very convenient, and often offers discounted rates over retail shopping. In fact, many items today are only available online, so you could miss out on opportunities if you do not have a credit card to shop online.

In addition, you can use a credit card to buy something that you need now, but pay it off later. In other words, you will not have to wait for the next several paychecks to save up for something that would be useful to have now.

Credit cards are also much safer to carry than cash. You do not have to show a stack of bills when paying for a purchase, which can be an invitation to muggers or thieves. On the other hand, credit cards are not such an invitation to steal. They can easily be traced, unlike cash. If your credit card is stolen or misplaced, you can get it blocked simply by making a phone call, thus making it unusable. On the other hand, cash can be stolen and used by the thief without you having any ability to trace it or get it back.

An additional benefit to using credit card is the discounts they often offer. Many businesses, including airlines, car rental agencies, and hotels offer discounts when you pay using a particular card. Some cards offer a certain percentage back if you buy certain items on your credit card, and many have affiliations with certain merchants.

Many credit cards, such as the chase cards, now have a membership flexible rewards program, which rewards points based on purchases. These points can be exchanged for goods once enough are accumulated.

Travel insurance, often for free, is another credit card benefit. For people who travel often, this is a very valuable service. Combined with the car rental and hotel discounts, credit cards can be great for travelers.

With so many benefits to offer, it is easy to see why credit cards have become a necessity.

DNA Testing: Bring Brothers and Sisters Together

There's no doubt that the modern field of paternity testing specifically and dna testing in general has come a long way in the last few years. As evidenced by popular television shows and reports we read about in newspapers and online, there's little chance that you can hope to get away with a crime in this modern world thanks in part to modern dna testing. The field has divided up too so that paternity testing that establishes the relationship between a father and child is only one small area of what paternity testing is capable of. With modern technologies, dna paternity testing and its derivatives can:

Determine the relationship between a father and child Determine which members of a family can immigrate to which country Determine who is someone's grandparents and Determine who is a brother or sister to who

Of course the obvious question would be why don't the people who are wondering about their connection to each other go to the parents. If the parents were able to get tested, the procedure would be a simply paternity testing option done in a straightforward way. But that's not always the case.

There are instances where the parents are not able to be tested for one reason or the other, and when this is the case the solution so that interested people can find out their relationship is a siblingship paternity test. People looking to have this test done should be aware that the results are not generally as conclusive as the more straightforward paternity testing variety, but these tests will give a general indication as to whether these people can be siblings.

Samples Collected

Like other forms of paternity testing, samples here are collected by a swab and the best laboratories can have the results in five to seven days. DNA samples from both the interested parties are necessary and it's always a good idea to look for the best laboratories with the best reputation and the proper credentials from corresponding health departments as well.

Leather Dyeing Techniques

Dyeing of Leather is easy with some basic knowledge of Leather and Leather Dye.

Different leathers have characteristics all their own. No two leathers will give the same results when dyed. It is suggested that you experiment with colors and techniques on a scrap piece.

For Block Dyeing Wrap a folded piece of cloth around a small block of wood and fasten the cloth in place with staples. Dip a wool dauber into some dye and apply to the cloth. Some good effects can be achieved on embossed and plain leather goods by rubbing lightly with long strokes.

Wrap a piece of cloth (cotton works well) around your index finger and Dip your finger into some dye and apply. By blotting out excess dye on another piece of cloth you can control the amount of dye and produce a shading effect. This technique works well for dyeing embossed blanks because you can apply dye to smaller areas.

Spraying - This requires some equipment: Spray gun, compressor, gloves, hoses, etc. Spraying gives good results for shading and even application of dye. It is suggested that you wear gloves to prevent the dye from getting on your skin.

Highlighting of belt can be achieved by applying lacquer (Neat-Lac or Lac-Kote) to the belt before using dye. Carefully avoid lacquered area when applying dye. Lacquer will resist antique finish but not leather dye and after dyeing the belt a coating of antique finish will bring out all the highlights.

Final protective finished for the belt include many substances including lacquer, acrylics, neatsfoot oil and waxes. Depending on what type of finish you want on the belt (glossy, semi-gloss, etc), it is suggested that you test some of these finishes. Possible finishes for the edge of belts include edge enamel, burnishing wax and edge dye.

These dyeing tips have been directed primarily at belts. These basic principals may be used in dyeing any other leather tooled or embossed items. Experimenting with different dyes and finishes will give your project a unique custom look.

Newborn Baby Gift Ideas – Radio Flyer Toys Make Great Keepsakes

Classic toys from a bygone era bespeak the tradition of the season and a connection with antiquity that is renewed with each holiday season. There are some things which seem impervious to the dimming factor time has on most. Christmas and traditions which are woven into its very fabric stand the test of time year after year. Most folks have great memories of the Radio Flyer wagon they got and if they are lucky, have kept.

Babies and the renewal of life, the freshness and love each tiny little bundle brings is also a timeless experience. Each new parent or grandparent will attest to this fact. Babies and the memory of babies stand forever young.

The marriage of babies and Christmas is almost unavoidable. Parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles the world over wait for Christmas to spoil and love the newest additions to their family circles, just as the childless wait for a baby to complete their Christmas celebrations.

Heirloom Gifts

Babies don't usually need a lot, nor are they very aware of the gifts bestowed upon them for their first Christmases. To this end it is fun, and befitting to select gifts of heirloom quality. This kind of gift has a value which goes beyond the item itself and springs up from tradition, love and the memories of antiquity as well as dreams for the baby's future.

Big bucks

An heirloom gift does not need to be expensive, but is usually of a higher quality than the more disposable counterpart. For example, a silver or pewter cup engraved with the babies name and birth date is not an extravagantly expensive gift. Yet the gift itself will last into future generations honoring the special feelings felt for this child. The grandbabies of this baby will share in that birthright of love as the cup passes hands.

Specifics

Heirloom gifts do not need to be fancy; some of the most beautiful heirloom gifts are the simplest. Toys made from wood like wooden cars and trucks or boats and animals are of heirloom quality. Raggedy Ann dolls are also cherished heirloom toys. This kind of heirloom gift can be played with and enjoyed in ways other than just observing it on a shelf.

Other heirloom gifts are less sturdy in play, but no less valued. Gifting a silver picture frame along with a certificate for a photography session is a gift that will certainly be appreciated long after it is given.

To select the perfect heirloom gift for the babies on your list think about traditional gifts such as: silver cups, bronzed baby booties, a pewter rattle. More modern gifts that still qualify as heirloom gifts include: classic books like those by Beatrix Potter or A.A. Milne, well made toys fashioned after eras past, porcelain dolls, bonnets, layettes and christening gowns.

Or think about any of the Radio Flyer toys, Airflow collectibles for pedal planes or tricycles. As a child, there is nothing like being able to have your own set of wheels to cruise around the neighborhood and many of those children will keep that toy forever and ever and even pass it on to their own children.
